A preview...

On Fire! About Leadership

  • The firefighter’s “customer” is the victim of fires, accidents and illness.  The fire chief’s “customer” is the firefighter.  Treat your firefighters as you would want them to treat their customers.

  • Think about how great it would be if all fire departments had a box at the door where firefighters coming into the station could shed their bad habits and leave them in a box at the door.

  • When your priorities are out of balance you risk losing your career, marriage, relationships with your kids and your health. Don’t let that happen!

  • I would caution you against trying to make everyone happy. I can tell you from experience that it is impossible and I recommend that you not try to do that.  Here’s why...

  • If you’re looking for a roadmap to the chief’s office, I have some good news for you.  The route has already been mapped.

  • It’s not your grandpa’s fire department any longer. The fire service has become a complex business.

  • When people come to you with problems, make them believe that helping them is the most important thing you have to do at that moment.

  • Don’t immortalize members because they’ve done stupid things and lived to tell about it.

  • The choice to allow firefighters who’ve been drinking to respond to an emergency call is not defensible.
